They are the same in that they are both versions of luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) but the cuts are different. Planks mimic hardwood boards and tile resembles square ceramics. It just comes down to style.
What is luxury vinyl flooring?
Luxury vinyl flooring is an affordable, true-to-life mimic of wood, tile, or stone. It's often difficult to tell it from the real thing, it's so realistic!
The images are created with 3D photography, so they're larger than life, with knots, raised grains, swirls, wormholes, veining and color variations, and bold patterns popping out. It's available in a wide assortment of colors, patterns, designs, and species that follow all the current trends.
Embossing gives it added depth and dimension; textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered and distressed, are available. It comes in matte, gloss, and high gloss finishes.
LVF can be cut either in planks (LVP) or groutable tile-size pieces (LVT).
How is vinyl plank flooring made?
Images are taken, the vinyl is cut into strips, and then it's mounted on boards to look like hardwood planks. You can get almost any species, but the most popular ones are oak, maple, walnut, cherry, and hickory. Some will add a high gloss finish that gives the floor even more style.
Many will also use vinyl plank when simulating stone. The large-format gives it a more continuous look, like that of quarried slabs. Tiles can be mixed and matched to create a unique design and many go so far as to use grout which now also comes in a variety of colors.

?Durability. This is layered with a top clear melamine wear sheet that protects against scratches, scuffs, and wear. LVF is also waterproof and that layer keeps spills from absorbing. They sit at the top waiting to be wiped off. With proper care, quality LVF can last up to 20 years. Thicker is better; it should be at least 20-mil, but depending if you have kids, pet, or heavy foot traffic you can go as high as 28-mil or more.
